New probationary constables have joined Northern Beaches Police Area Command, adding officers to the command responsible for Frenchs Forest and surrounding suburbs.
Ten officers from NSW Police Class 369 were allocated to Northern Beaches Police Area Command after attesting at the NSW Police Academy in Goulburn on Friday, 21 August. The recruits began duties at police stations across NSW on Monday, 24 August.
Class 369 comprised 353 probationary constables, making it the largest NSW Police graduating class in 14 years. The officers will complete 12 months of on-the-job training and distance education before being confirmed to the rank of constable.
Frenchs Forest is home to a 24-hour police station
Frenchs Forest Police Station operates 24 hours a day from Frenchs Forest Road West and forms part of Northern Beaches Police Area Command. The command also operates police stations at Dee Why, Manly and Mona Vale.
Northern Beaches Police Area Command covers Frenchs Forest and nearby suburbs including Belrose, Davidson, Forestville, Killarney Heights, Allambie Heights and Oxford Falls. NSW Police allocated the new recruits to the wider command and did not publish individual station assignments.
The arrival of the new officers follows separate concerns raised in Parliament about youth-related crime across the region.
Theft and disorder feature in recent French Forest reports
Recent Frenchs Forest police call-outs have included reports of theft, break-ins, assault, vandalism and disorder. During the week ending 21 August, police received reports of property stolen from Peacock Parade, several alleged intruders around Frenchs Forest Road West and Rodborough Road, an assault at Naree Road and groups of disorderly youths near Frenchs Forest Road East, Warringah Road and Forest Way.
Earlier reports in June and July included alleged break-ins at Aquatic Drive and Rodborough Road, shop theft at Forest Way and property stolen from premises on Frenchs Forest Road. Police also responded to reports of disorder and an assault on Frenchs Forest Road West.
Youth crime concerns raised
Member for Davidson Matt Cross asked the NSW Government in June what measures were being taken to reduce youth-related crime across the Northern Beaches, Ku-ring-gai and North Shore police commands.
The government responded on 9 July that police were using targeted patrols in identified hotspots, high-visibility operations, bail enforcement and diversion strategies aimed at reducing youth offending. The response also referred to police working with young people considered at risk of offending and with repeat offenders.
Recruits begin year-long operational training
The new probationary constables will spend their first 12 months completing operational training and further study while serving within NSW Police.
Of the 353 officers who graduated with Class 369, 67 were allocated across the North West Metropolitan Region, including 10 assigned to Northern Beaches Police Area Command. NSW Police did not provide a breakdown showing how many recruits would work from Frenchs Forest Police Station.
